Do you know of a convenient way of referring to this sort of clothing (waistcoats, dress shirts, sportcoats, blazers, suits, ties, and all the things I am missing out) in a gender-neutral way?

Most of the time I see "menswear" which is a little vague and also rather... presumptive? It's not really accurate to call it menswear if women are wearing it in my opinion.

(This is just intended to help me broaden my vocabulary, not as a criticism - it really doesn't matter an awful lot in the great scheme of things and I absolutely adore this page anyways.)

This has been sitting in my inbox for-freaking-ever, because I have absolutely no idea how to answer it.

Personally, I agree; “menswear” (I know it’s in the description of this blog, but bear with me) is kind of presumptive, but it’s also the easiest (and shortest) way of getting across what you’re trying to say.

Despite that, however, I think this is an important debate. ”Menswear” doesn’t engage properly with the issue at hand, which is that clothes should not have gender connotations attached to them. Although there again you run into problems, partly because clothes do have gender connotations at the moment, and also partly because many people actually use clothing to portray exactly who they feel they are underneath. So, for example, those who were born biologically female but whose gender identification is male often prefer to dress in traditionally ‘male’ clothing in order to express this. In which case, is that menswear?

The short answer is, I don’t have an answer for you. But I welcome any and all suggestions from followers of this blog: how do you refer to the clothes you like to wear, or the clothes you enjoy seeing others in? Does “menswear” offend you or do you worry it offends others? Get involved!
